Upright freezer repairs: what goes wrong
Frost free upright freezers make cold on a finned evaporator behind the back panel and blow it through the drawers with a fan. Several times a day a heater melts the frost off the evaporator. When the heater, its timer or sensor fails, the evaporator turns into a block of ice, the fan cannot move air, and the top drawers go soft while the bottom drawer near the evaporator stays frozen. That one fault accounts for most upright freezer calls we get.
Manual defrost uprights, which have evaporator shelves that the drawers sit on, are simpler and fail at the thermostat, the compressor relay or the door gasket, or ice up heavily because the door is not sealing. Both kinds suffer from blocked drains that leave an ice sheet in the bottom of the cabinet.

Upright freezer repair questions
Why do the top drawers of my upright freezer go soft?+
The evaporator at the back has iced over because the defrost system has failed, so the fan can no longer push cold air to the top drawers. Clearing the ice is temporary; the failed heater, sensor or timer must be replaced.
Can an upright freezer be regassed?+
Yes, if a leak is confirmed. We find the leak, repair it, replace the filter drier, pull a vacuum and recharge by weight, all on site.
