Bar fridge repairs: what goes wrong
Most bar fridges have a small compressor, a static evaporator that forms a small freezer shelf or ice box, a mechanical thermostat and a door with a magnetic gasket. A smaller number, especially the very cheap mini fridges, are thermoelectric with a Peltier element and a fan instead of a compressor. The two types fail differently and we repair both.
On compressor bar fridges the usual faults are a thermostat that has failed, a relay that has burnt out, a gasket that has shrunk so the ice box frosts solid, and a refrigerant leak in the evaporator, often from a bottle being forced in or ice being chipped. Thermoelectric fridges usually fail at the fan or the power supply and simply stop cooling.

Bar fridge repairs are quick when the fault is electrical: a thermostat, relay or overload is replaced in minutes and the fridge is tested before we leave. Regassing a bar fridge involves a very small charge, often under 50 grams of R600a or R134a, and must be done by weight. A pierced evaporator on a cheap bar fridge is sometimes not worth repairing, and we will say so.

Is it worth repairing a bar fridge?+
For a thermostat, relay, gasket or fan, yes, the repair is inexpensive. For a leaking evaporator on a cheap mini fridge, often not, and we will tell you before you spend anything.
Why does my bar fridge freeze the drinks?+
The thermostat is either set too cold or has failed with its contacts closed so the compressor never stops. Try a warmer setting first; if that makes no difference the thermostat needs replacing.
