Wine cooler repairs: what goes wrong
Wine coolers come in two kinds. Compressor models work like a small fridge with a very fine temperature control, usually electronic, and are the only kind that can hold a cellar temperature in a hot Harare room. Thermoelectric models use a Peltier element and fans, have no compressor and no gas, and can only cool a limited amount below room temperature, which is why they struggle in October.
The common faults on compressor wine coolers are a temperature that drifts or swings, a sensor or control board that has failed, a fan that has become noisy, and a glass door seal that lets humid air in and causes condensation and mould. Dual zone cabinets can fail in one zone only, usually a damper or a second fan. Thermoelectric coolers usually fail at the fans or the Peltier module.
