About Defy fridges in Harare
Older Defy fridges are mechanical: a thermostat, a compressor with a relay and overload, a static or semi static evaporator and a door gasket. They run for twenty years and the faults are cheap to fix. Newer Defy models, built since the brand became part of the Beko group, are no frost fridges with fans, defrost heaters, electronic controls and R600a refrigerant, and they fail more like a Beko or a Samsung than like the Defy of the past.
On the older models we see thermostats that have lost their charge, relays and overloads burnt out by repeated restarts during load shedding, hardened gaskets that let the freezer ice up, and refrigerant leaks in evaporators pierced during defrosting. On the newer no frost models the common faults are defrost heaters and sensors, evaporator fans, and control boards after a surge.

Is my old Defy fridge worth repairing?+
Usually yes. Older Defy fridges are simple and the parts are inexpensive. Unless the evaporator is leaking or the cabinet is rusted through, a repair is far cheaper than a replacement and the fridge will run for years more.
Why does my Defy no frost fridge ice up at the back?+
The defrost heater, the defrost sensor or the timer has failed, so the frost that should melt every few hours builds into a sheet of ice. We replace the failed part and clear the ice.
